Pop Daddy's Halloween Countdown Day 24

Day 24(Originally poster on September 24, 2020): Here's a blast from the past courtesy of Scholastic Books. With stories to chill your bones and illustrations to crap your pants. It's Scary Stories to tell on the Dark!

.             Oh, little Pop Daddy, if only you knew...

I can't remember how old I was, when I got this book , but I was still in school. I can remember when you ordered from the Scholastic book flyer, the teacher would order your books and your teacher would send the order in. When they came, 4-5 weeks later, they'd call you to the front of the class at the end of the say to claim your paper treasures. I looked through the books I received and there it was, with a ghoul that looked like a giant clown with a pipe emerging from the ground, this was a new world for me. I wasn't new to scary story books, I had read "In a Dark, Dark Room"

                            Also by Alvin Schwartz

and some pop up book about a haunted castle tour(I can't find an image unfortunately), but this was mostly words!

And images that will be burned into your memory

For those of you unfamiliar, this book is the first in the series of 3 which is a compilation of different stories, from old tales (The Wendigo)
                       Sometimes less is more

to newer at the time stories (The Babysitter)

"uh, sure, I can draw kids"

to urban legends (High Beams)

"Yes, I know what a car looks like"

there were plenty of tales to keep you entertained. And each one was usually accompanied with a drawing or two.

The drawings, were very well done, the one below is one that people usually remember, even though in my opinion, as a kid, the story wasn't all that great.

Yeah, it's all coming back now

But, those drawings would definitely keep you up at night. My favorite stories from the series, were "Such Things Happen" it told what happened when you run afoul of someone who may be a witch

and "Harold" which tells the dangers of Scarecrow abuse.

There was a Youtube channel a few years back which took tracks from the audio book and made cg animations, which added to the creepiness. A movie was released last year, which I may do a review on. If you can get a copy, pick it up, to add a little spice to your Halloween season.

Stay Spooky!
