Pop Daddy's Halloween Countdown Day 55

Day 55: 44 years ago today John Carpenter's Halloween was released to cinemas worldwide, and the horror genre was changed forever. But, this isn't a review of the first one, this is pretty much a where I stand on each movie with the pros and con's.  Halloween (1978) The classic Pros: Pretty much everything from atmosphere to setting, this is the classic and I will have more on this in a few days, actually. Plus, it includes my favorite scary movie scene.   Cons: There's nothing I can really think of. Aside from some very small plot holes.  Halloween II (1981) The sequel that picks up immediately where the other left off.  Pros: Adds so much extra to the first movie, I did a mini review 2 weeks ago, if you want to check that out.  Cons: Laurie seems to take a backseat in this movie to Loomis which is a shame, because she wouldn't return for another 17 years / 6 movies. Last time we see Laurie and Loomis together. Although ...

Day 48: Here's a blast from the past that I watched all the time as a kid and still gives me nightmares: Killer Clowns from Outer Space!  The basic plot is when a UFO that looks like a circus tent lands in a small town, the aliens inside look (and act) just like clowns. Armed with popcorn guns and a while variety of circus themed weapons to trap people in cotton candy cocoons and snack on them! It's up to College Student Mike, his girlfriend Debbie, her ex Cop Dave and the ice cream slinging Terenzi brothers to stop them. This was on HBO all the time when I was I kid, and it's one of the favorites of my Mrs. so, it's always in rotation at our house. There aren't any big names, except for John Vernon (the dean from Animal House)  and Christopher Titus (in a small role before he was famous) everyone does a great job. The clowns themselves are done by the Chiodo brothers who did Large Marge and the Trolls in Ernest Scared Stupid and they look am...

Day 38(Originally Posted October 8th, 2020): So, I was reading something today and Tommy Lee Wallace's name was brought up(2022 update: today is his birthday, so that may have had something to do with it), so, for today I thought I'd bring up his directorial debut: Halloween III: Season of the Witch.  Halloween 3, is considered by many to be the black sheep of the franchise, for the reason that's the elephant in the room here: No Michael Myers. You see after part 2,they decided to make Halloween 1 and 2 their own little story and every year they'd release another "Halloween" film with a different story.                      Actually, there is a Myers cameo.  The story is about a Dr who investigates a toy company which makes popular masks, with a sinister design... The mustacheoed sex machine Tom Atkins thrills us as Dr. Challis and he gives it his all.    ...

Pop Daddy's Halloween Countdown Day 34

Day 34(Posted October 4th, 2020): I thought I'd keep it simple with a review from a film brought to us from two masters of horror: John Carpenter's Christine.  This film is about a boy named Arnie and a car named Christine. Arnie is bullied and throughout the movie he changes, as people around him, meet their end by the car, but the car can't really have a mind of it's own...can it? First things first, this movie is a slow burn, horror wise. The first hour or so is a high school drama and it's well done. The bully stuff is your standard Stephen King fare, leather jackets, switchblades and gangs. The romance is an interesting twist on the love triangle trope(the girl is jealous of the CAR and vice versa). This is one of my favorite Carpenter films as one of my favorite King adaptations. Plus, Carpenter's score is top notch here and is one of my favorites. But, as I said before, this is a slow burn, so it's not for everyone, if you want...

Day 31(Posted on October 1st, 2020): While I do love me some scary movies, I do also like some not so scary ones, because they're more fun to watch and that's why I have tonight's pick of The Monster Squad.  Monster Squad is about a boy named Sean who is a fan of all things scary, especially movies (the house has the perfect. View of a drive in which is showing Groundhogs Day 12, it's just the first film rereleased for the 11th time) and his mom picks up for him at a yard sale a copy of the diary of Van Helsing, too cool! But, someone else is looking to get this diary, a Mr. ALUCARD. And 12 year old Sean figures out that's Dracula backwards faster than 60 year old Dr. Brewster did in Son of Dracula. Dracula is real in this movie and he's getting the monsters ready to take over the world, he's got Frankenstein's monster, the Creature from the black lagoon, the mummy and the Wolf Man! (Played my Uncle Rico when he's a human). Th...

Day 29 (Originally Posted on September 29, 2020) So, except for the food reviews, all of the movies and TV shows and memories, have been things that I've loved and had memories of. But keep in mind, they're not all good memories. So, today I'm looking at my least favorite of the Halloween movies and surprise, it doesn't involve Rob Zombie, Busta Rhymes or Paul Rudd.  So, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is, in my opinion, the WORST of the Halloween series. At the end of Part 4 Michael is confirmed dead (later retconned)  and his niece Jamie murders her mother (later retconned) and Jamie is apparently possessed by Michael's murderous spirit (later retconned). The movie opens with Michael surviving and Jamie now in a hospital. Jamie's stepsister/heroine from the last movie shows up and is dead in the first 20 minutes. Thus giving us her friend/heroine for this movie/worst character in the movie/worst character in the franchise/runn...

Day 25(Originally Posted September 25 2020): I reviewed the book last night, today it's the movie, so how is Scary Stories to tell in the Dark?  It's good for what it is, I know that isn't the most glowing recommendation, but, let me explain. The movie's plot is about a group of kids who discover a book and the characters from the book come to life and Snatch the kids away one by one(Such as Harold, the white lady and the dangly man) , until they find a way to stop them. The movie feels like instead of being it's own thing, it felt like it was trying to be Goosebumps. Fans of the book most likely won't like it, mostly because the type of book would fit better as an anthology film. It's decent, but if you're a fan of book, it will most likely be a one and done. Its pretty safe for the older kids, they'll most likely make it a Halloween staple.

Day 10(Originally Posted September 10th 2020):  While I'm a big movie guy in most cases I prefer sequels to the originals (Rocky, Phantasm, Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw, Dawn of the Dead, etc) Evil Dead is no exception. One of my favorites, Evil Dead II in my opinion is the horror version of Rocky II. A soft remake of the first, but with a budget. And this brings extra gore, extra monsters and extra laughs.  Bruce Campbell is the star here and he brings it his all, his acting and his physical performance here are both incredible. Everything from the one liners to the shotgun to the chainsaw hand all starts here. While the original Evil Dead is a classic, I feel you can skip that one and start right here, then go right to Army of Darkness. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out. Stay Spooky!

Pop Daddy's Halloween Countdown, Day 1: Favorite Scary Movie

So, to start things off, I thought I'd keep it simple with my favorite scary movie, enjoy! (Originally Posted September 1st, 2020) So, heres day 1 of my Halloween grab bag, so I thought I'd start with my favorite scary movie.  Although its not really a horror movie, Ridley Scott's 1979 movie Alien(trust me, I will most likely cover another late 70's horror movie later on) the Alien movie, while scary on the basis of the creature alone, the cramped in area of the Nostromo's hallways and ducts are enough to make even the non claustrophobic feel uncomfortable. Its the unknown, the fact that there is no escape, help isn't coming and there's a creature hunting you down. From the design of the Xenomorph to the Jerry Goldsmith score, to the windy rocky terrain of LV-426 everything in this movie fits together for a perfect sci-fi/horror movie. (Also, I will say that Aliens is my favorite of the series) (And as a Pop Daddy extra, enjoy these R...
