Pop Daddy's Halloween Countdown Day 55
Day 55: 44 years ago today John Carpenter's Halloween was released to cinemas worldwide, and the horror genre was changed forever. But, this isn't a review of the first one, this is pretty much a where I stand on each movie with the pros and con's.
Halloween (1978)
The classic
Pros: Pretty much everything from atmosphere to setting, this is the classic and I will have more on this in a few days, actually. Plus, it includes my favorite scary movie scene.
Cons: There's nothing I can really think of. Aside from some very small plot holes.
Halloween II (1981)
The sequel that picks up immediately where the other left off.
Pros: Adds so much extra to the first movie, I did a mini review 2 weeks ago, if you want to check that out.
Cons: Laurie seems to take a backseat in this movie to Loomis which is a shame, because she wouldn't return for another 17 years / 6 movies. Last time we see Laurie and Loomis together. Although I love Dick Warlock as Michael, he makes the mask look odd. Also, although we learn that Laurie and Michael are related, we don't see Laurie learn that. That would be like if we didn't see Luke learn that Vader was his father.
Halloween 3 (1982)
And now for something completely different...
Pros: TOM ATKINS, the score, the story, this one does get pretty scary also.
Cons: If you don't know what you're going into with this movie (A halloween movie that isn't connected to the other movies and has no Michael Myers) you're probably gonna be confused and probably wont have a good time.
Halloween 4 (1988)
Michael Myers makes his return.
Pros: That opening sequence will definitely get you in the Halloween mood, best opening of the series.
Cons: The worst mask of the series. The plot feels like a soft reboot of the original Halloween.
Halloween 5 (1989)
Michael takes his revenge...maybe?
Pros: uh...Donald Pleasence is back as Loomis...
Cons:...and he's batshit crazy. I did a review of this a few weeks back, I feel this is the worst of the worst(look for it, if you wanna know how bad I think it was) . Although the mask is a little better than 4,the actor playing Michael doesn't tuck it in, so, it looks weird. Plus the Myers house went to a small two story house to a huge mansion. Plus, Tina is the worst. Plus, they made is up as they went along it feels like, also the two bumbling cops.
Halloween 6 (1995)
The end of one era
Pros: Paul Rudd is here and that's cool, the best looking mask since 2, Loomis isn't as crazy here, John Strode's death is probably one of, if not the best of the series (theatrical version only) the Myers house looks closer to the original version.
Cons:there are two versions of this movie and they feel like two separate movies that are unfinished. Paul Rudd can be creepy in it. Turns out Michael kills due to being part of a cult.
Halloween H20 (1998)
The beginning of a new era
The pros: Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, the film feels more polished than the previous 3 both film wise and script wise. There are truly some suspenseful scenes.
The cons: THAT CGI MASK, holy crap, I know it's only for one scene, but it's bad. Depending on how you felt about the previous 3, you might be bummed that those were no longer canon.
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
Man.....
Pros: The original Myers house is back. Jamie Lee is there for one scene. The Mask is pretty scary. If you're doing a marathon, you can skip this one.
Cons: I'm gonna be honest, this isn't a good movie. But, it's not the worst. They invalidate the ending of H20, there's sort of a romantic subplot with two characters that never meet, this movie was released 18 years ago and feels the most dated.
Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007)
A new take on the old story.
Pros: Malcolm McDowell and Brad Dourif are the shining stars of this. The mask looks good. The fight in the bathroom against Joe Grizzly is very well done. The soundtrack is good.
Cons: Almost every character is a horrible person. The dialogue sounds very Rob Zombie-esque. This doesn't feel as much as a Halloween film as it does a Rob Zombie film.
Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 (2009)
The second one of that new one
Pros: The soundtrack, Brad Dourif, Malcolm McDowell...
Cons: Although he is a huge dick in this movie. Once again everyone is horrible. Michael doesn't really wear the mask. The white horse visions of his mother. It feels like it was made to just be made.
Halloween (2018)
A return to form
Pros: For the first time since 2, Michael is scary again. The mask looks amazing. Laurie is back and she's full Sarah Connor. There are references to all the other movies. That one long shot of Michael exploring the neighborhood bringing death.
Cons: Michael and Laurie are no longer related, so, the fact he comes after her doesn't feel right, along with her still being obsessed after 40 years.
