Pop Daddy's Halloween Countdown Day 59
Day 59: Earlier I talked about my favorite horror video game series, which was the Castlevania series, today I'll talk about the best one: Super Castlevania IV
Now, if you're from the NES generation, you're familiar with the vampire killing, monster hunting, whip cracking, holy water throwing Belmont family. Heck, Simon is up there with Mario, Link, Mega Man and Samus. He was even a main character on the video game centered Captain N.
You once again play as Simon and your task is to make your way through Dracula's Castle taking down monsters. As the game starts you make your way through a rocky valley with a skull shaped mountain in the back along with a soft organ soundtrack.
The atmosphere is set perfectly as you start the next level the music picks up as you enter the outer grounds the soundtrack starts to pick up with what I think is the best track of the Castlevania saga (even better than Vampire Killer) Simon Belmont's theme. This song gets the blood pumping and is a heroic tune to play as we whip our way through skeletons. From the outer grounds we make our way through swamps and caverns, courtyards amd dungeons, making our way through the castle.
This game features bads such as a ghostly horseman, Golems, floating skulls along with the classics bats, Medusa heads, mummies, a Frankenstein monster, the grim reaper. Each boss comes with their own suspenseful boss music. Then we reach the end, a red room with nothing in it, but a coffin. This is it. Dracula fights you with electric bolts and beams of light, you beat him once and the music stops and his face changes. He transforms into his final form.
Then, Simon's theme starts. It's on. This game is side scrolling platforming as it's best. This game pushed the Super Nintendo to its limits and it's beautiful to look at and listen to. If you have a way to play it, do it. I can't recommend it enough.
